The Insurance Commissioner ordered insurers to preserve property insurance coverage for 124,000 policyholders impacted by recent wildfires in Sierra foothills counties, shielding them from non-renewals for one year. This move is part of a broader strategy to maintain insurance availability in wildfire-prone areas and extends moratorium protections to affected communities.[1]

The Department of Insurance announced enforcement actions against Tesla Insurance and State National Insurance Company for failing to adequately handle hundreds of automobile policyholder claims. Regulators cite repeated consumer complaints and violations by both companies, and action could lead to significant monetary penalties and potential loss of their ability to transact in California.[3]

Commissioner Ricardo Lara’s proposed rules could make it harder for consumer groups to receive funding when challenging insurer rate hikes, raising transparency concerns.
